Groove3 Mixing in Dolby Atmos with Headphones Explained [TUTORIAL]
In this extensive mixing video course, you’ll join veteran Groove3 instructor Gary Hiebner on a journey through the world of Dolby Atmos as he details for you how to create unforgettable audio experiences with headphones that surround your listeners and engage their senses like never before. Whether you’re creating gaming, audio, or video content (or all of the above), the world of Dolby Atmos opens the doors to immersive surround sound, placing your listeners in the heart of the action. These Dolby Amos mixing videos are designed for new Dolby Atmos users.
Gary begins with an overview of binaural mixing and what exactly Dolby Atmos is, along with some of the key components, such as the renderer, the bed, and objects. Then he goes into more detail about the renderer, including how to set it up, speaker location, and more terminology clarification with objects and beds. Learn how to properly prepare your mix for a Dolby Atmos mix, including the exporting of various stems.
Next, Gary shows you how to set up the platform in four different popular DAWs—Logic, Pro Tools, Studio One, and Cubase—including any special adjustments you need to make in each. Then it’s down to the nitty-gritty, and Gary demonstrates how to create a bed and pan the sounds of a drumset, creating a 3D audio space for the drums in relation to where a drummer would be. You’ll also learn how to use different binaural modes (near, mid, and far) to push objects closer or farther away, and Gary provides some recommendations on which modes to start with.
There’s much more to come in the rest of the course, such as various modes for orchestra (creating a 3D space for an orchestra recording), automating objects (moving the position of various objects within the 3D space), exporting a Dolby Atmos mix, trimming and downmixing (additional exporting options), LFE channel (creating an LFE bus for specific tracks), using reverbs (applying different amounts to certain speakers, etc.), and more! The course rounds out with a three-part demonstration of adding various sound effects to a video to create desired results.
Dolby Atmos is an exciting new frontier for audio production, and this course will show you how to create these effects for your listeners while working with headphones only. By the end, you’ll be ready to start implementing these practices right away!
